Submission Guidelines: Travel Grants to the International Film Editors Forum 2022

On 15 October 2022, the Cologne-based Edimotion – Festival for the Art of Film Editing will host its fifth edition of the International Film Editors Forum (IFEF). After the pandemic forced the IFEF online in 2020 and 2021, we will revert back to the in-person networking format we premiered in 2018 and 2019. And for the first time, we will award 5-10 travel grants to film editors who would otherwise not be able to afford the trip to Cologne.

Edimotion is the world's oldest and largest film festival that focuses entirely on film editing. In four days full of screenings, film talks, panels and networking events, we bring the art of film editing to the closer attention of cineastes and the general public, but also strive to give editing a stronger voice within the film industry and raise awareness for its achievements, working methods and challenges.

The International Film Editors Forum (IFEF) was launched in 2018 as part of our expanded international outreach, moving beyond our main German language program. The forum is a full-day networking event aimed at film editors who are actively involved in advancing their profession and its working conditions in their respective countries of origin. Participants are given the opportunity to build on their experiences, and develop visions and solutions to address the various challenges facing the profession all over the world. Elements of the workshop formats „world café“ and „open space“ are used.

The IFEF is part of the international program at Edimotion, which also includes a Masterclass, an International Panel and the Guest Country Evening. All four events are in English. In 2022, we have invited Spain to be our guest country.

Many productive impulses have emerged from past IFEF events. For example, the idea of an international umbrella organization for film editor associations was developed at IFEF 2018, resulting in the foundation of TEMPO during the 2019 festival. TEMPO aims to strengthen the global cooperation of film editors organizations, associations, guilds, and their membership. TEMPO has since become a sponsor of the IFEF, with which it shares many goals, foremost the aim of forging closer bonds and collaboration between international editors.

The last in-person edition of the IFEF brought together editors from 20 countries to Cologne, while the online editions of the past two years saw nearly 30 countries represented. As inspiring as these online editions were, we believe in the inherent strength of humans meeting in person, and building connections that can then be expanded in the virtual realm. But we are well aware that not all associations and their editors can afford the travel and accommodation expenses involved in traveling to Cologne. That is why in 2022 we are awarding travel grants to assist editors from less privileged countries.

Who can apply for a grant?

We want to enable the IFEF participation of film editors from developing countries that may not even have an editor’s association yet, or whose association cannot afford to support their travel costs. As a guide, we are using the DAC List of ODA Recipients, published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Only applications from countries that are on this list can be submitted, and applicants should not just be a citizen of one of these countries, but also currently live and work there. Exceptions can be made for recently displaced editors, such as a Ukrainian citizen currently exiled in another country.

It is also important to us that applicants show a personal interest in the editing profession that goes beyond their own film projects. They should be active in whatever film editing community structures exist in their countries, be dedicated to improving working conditions and the recognition of the profession there, and be keen to exchange experiences and ideas on this with other film editors from all over the world.

Please note that a reasonable command of English is a prerequisite for applicants, since otherwise they would find it difficult to benefit from participating in the IFEF.

What do the travel grants cover?

The grants cover travel expenses from the recipients’ place of residence to Cologne and back, as well accommodation for two nights. Beyond their participation in the IFEF 2022, grant recipients will also gain accreditation to other events at the festival, such as the International Panel and the Guest Country Evening.

Travel routes will be booked by the organizers of the festival in consultation with the grant recipients. The grants are not transferred as cash, but it should not necessary to lay out the costs in advance, unless a booking from within the recipients’ country would be significantly less expensive than from outside.

What is the selection process?

The time frame to submit applications is from 1 July – 07 August 2022.

The decision who receives a travel grant will be made by a jury of three experienced and internationally active film editors. The number of grant recipients will be between 5 and 10.

The recipients will be announced on 15 August 2022. Before this announcement, grant recipients have to give a binding commitment to participate in the International Film Editors Forum on 15 October 2022.

Applications have to be submitted no later than August 07, 2022, 23:59 CET

If you wish to apply, please submit the following:

• Filled out Application Form (PDF is here).
• Letter of motivation (max. 2 pages, with a description of your professional career and current work situation, your personal commitment to the profession, as well as some thoughts on the future development of film editing in your home country).
